Arameans in Edessa
"Around the same time, this line of thought also emerged in Greece. This was because the Greeks had derived their own script from the Phoenician script, and as we know, the Phoenician script was flawed, and vowels could not be recorded in its abjad system. However, the Greeks corrected this flaw and invented specific forms for vowels, making them an integral part of the alphabetic characters. They also altered the direction of writing from right-to-left to left-to-right. The inhabitants of Edessa (Urfa), who were a group of Arameans, called themselves "Syriacs" and introduced certain reforms to their script. They invented specific signs for vowels and sounds that did not exist in the ancient Aramaic script, allowing each text to be translated accurately into Greek, Persian, and Arabic. This script was considered one of the best systems during the early centuries of the common era and the dawn of Islam. For a long time, scholars of the East in Syria, Mesopotamia, and Iran (especially in the academy of Gondishapur), and even in Italy, Sicily, and Spain, wrote their books using the Syriac script. Furthermore, as we mentioned earlier in the main text, the books of Mani were also predominantly written in this script."
