Max von Oppenheim
Max von Oppenheim (1860–1946) was a German diplomat, archaeologist, and orientalist best known for his excavations at the ancient site of Tell Halaf in modern-day Syria. Trained in law and Middle Eastern studies, he served the German Foreign Office while pursuing extensive research on Arab cultures and ancient Near Eastern civilizations. His archaeological discoveries and publications made him a prominent figure in Near Eastern studies, despite controversy surrounding his political activities during World War I and later associations with Nazi Germany.
