History / Special Features
According to tradition, the history of the church goes back to the second half of the first millennium. The church is also the burial place of two bishops and a Marphiyono who lived in the 19th century.One of the church’s most special features is its altar. Unlike the usual stone altars, it is made of wood and is richly carved with detailed decorations.
Present Day
After its restoration, the church is now in good condition, both inside and outside. During the summer, services are held there from time to time, as priests stay in the village during their holidays.From spring to autumn, more than 300 Christians live in the village. Over the years, emigrants have also built around 80 new houses. Besides Mor Kuryakos, Mor Eshayo and several other churches and chapels in the area have been renovated.
