A Metrical Homily on Holy Mor Ephrem

"He who became a crown for the entire Arameandom (Oromoyotho), [and] by him we have been brought close to spiritual beauty. This man was the master orator among the Syriacs (Suryoye); all teachers since have been enriched by him."

In a homily on Saint Ephrem the Syrian, Saint Jacob of Serugh describes Ephrem as belonging to the Aramean people. He uses the term Oromoyutho (Aramean nation) and calls Ephrem the “crown of the entire Aramean nation.” In the same passage he also describes Ephrem as the chief orator among the Syriacs, suggesting that the homily uses “Aramean” and “Syriac” within the same cultural context when referring to Ephrem and his people.
