Tlawhe—Aramean Lentil Soup

Tlawhe, also spelled Tlaughe, Tloughe, there are many ways to spell this lentil soup which is a meal eaten for breakfast by us Syriac–Arameans. It is preferably eaten with red onion or scallions, lots of parsley, and fresh bread on the side. The soup is healthy and a great option for vegetarians and vegans.

Ingredients:

  1. 4 dl red lentils
  2. 2 liters water
  3. 1 tbsp salt

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the lentils in cold water.
  2. Boil up the lentils in the water and the salt.
  3. Remove the boiling foam that forms to get a yellow color on the lentil soup. Let boil for approx. 40 minutes.
  4. Serve warm.

Tip: To get a heartier soup, add 1 dl wheat kernels, rice, or fresh pumpkin. Let boil together.
